1 Post-doc and 3 Ph.D. positions in experimental quantum optics: optical atomic clocks for space

The I-SOC mission is a future ESA mission, consisting of operating an optical lattice clock on the ISS and comparing it with ground clocks. The goal is testing the equivalence principle with high precision and performing relativistic geodesy from space. A possible flight date is 2023.

The mission development started in April 2017 with the pre-phase-A, consisting in developing a preliminary design of the space clock, suitable for achieving the science goals, and demonstrating the clock specifications on a breadboard demonstrator. The work is funded by ESA and will be performed in cooperation with ESA scientific and technical personell and also in interaction with industrial consortia that are currently developing laser subsystems for the mission.

The science team (HHU, U. Birmingham, PTB, Observatoire de Paris, Czech Techn. U., INRIM, U. Firenze) has a long-standing experience with precision optical and cold atom instrumentation in general, atomic frequency metrology in particular. It has developed the first modular, transportable lattice clock (see http://arxiv.org/abs/1603.06062, and C. R. Phys. 16, 553 (2015), Sci. Rep. 6, 33973 (2016). It currently has reached an instability at the 3 × 10^-18 level and inaccuracy at 3 x 10^-17 level and represents the breadboard demonstrator of the I-SOC instrument.

Within this project, 3 Ph.D. student positions and a 2-year post-doc position are available, starting immediately.

The Ph.D. students will work on different aspects of improving the performance (stability, accuracy) and robustness of the demonstrator, and perform experimentation in and out of the metrology laboratory, including field tests (mountains) and comparisons with the ACES mission of ESA (2018+).
The Ph.D. student applicants should have a strong interest and ability to work on a challenging experimental project.

The post-doc‘s work consists of a mix of experimentation, design, simulation and co-managing for the space mission design phase, also providing support to the coordinator of the project in producing the documentation. This position thus offers the opportunity to work on the design of a state-of-the-art optical instrument, managing several concurrent activities and interacting with several research groups and with the European Space Agency.

The post-doc should have understanding of complex cold atom/optical equipment and excellent organizational and communication skills (written and interpersonal).
