PhD Student

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research centre for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, postgraduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2000 people.

For experimental work at the interface of physics, chemistry and climate research in the Surface Chemistry Group we are looking for a

PhD Student

Studying the hydrogen bonding structure at solid and aqueous interfaces with X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Your tasks
Solid and aqueous solution surfaces of complex chemical composition play a substantial role in the nucleation of cloud droplets and ice particles. You will investigate the structure of water and hydrated chemical species at proxy solution and mineral oxide interfaces by in situ X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy at the molecular level. Furthermore you have the chance to participate other in situ XPS activities around the Near Ambient Pressure Photoemission (NAPP) endstation at the Swiss Light Source (SLS).

Your profile
You hold a master degree or equivalent in experimental physics or physical and theoretical chemistry. Further you are motivated to work in an interdisciplinary team. Ideally you have been in contact with applications of electron spectroscopy in surface science.
The experimental work will be at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, the PhD degree will be awarded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich).

We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
