Ph.D. Position: Rydberg excitations in hollow core fibers

We are seeking a candidate for Ph.D. for our “Strong Interactions in hollow core Fibers”-Project (SIF) with a starting date from now on (paid in accordance to TV-L E13 50%).

Our research group “Experimental Quantum Optics and Quantum Information” at the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz focusses on investigating quantum optics and quantum information science with cold, neutral atoms.
Within our project on the investigation of Rydberg atoms inside hollow core optical fibers, we have an open position for a PhD-Student. This position is part of the DFG Priority Program Giant Interactions in Rydberg Systems (GiRyd), a German wide collaboration between research groups studying Rydberg physics.

One of the main goals of our project is to create a highly efficient, extended, quasi one-dimensional light-atom interface using Rydberg excitations of cold Rubidium atoms inside a hollow core fiber. In the future, we want to use this system for quantum simulations and quantum information processing with strongly correlated non-classical states of light.

What we offer:
Within the SIF project, we offer you the opportunity for independent hands-on work in a state-of-the-art quantum optics lab. Within your thesis, you will have the possibility to investigate a variety of interesting topics, including:

  • Characterizing the interactions between Rydberg atoms and the fiber surfaces using excitation spectra inside a hollow core fiber.
  • Studying non-classical multi-photon states generated by the non-local interactions between different Rydberg excitations inside the fiber.
  • Developing and implementing detection schemes for few to single photons to measure correlation functions and for quantum state tomography.

In addition to cutting edge research, you will also have the opportunity to present your work on international conferences and workshops.

You should have an excellent university degree (Master of Science or equivalent) in physics. Previous experience in the field of experimental laser physics and/or quantum optics and/or the physics of cold quantum gases is favorable.
